Platts to launch Global Construction Materials Index Dec. 1

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, will launch the Platts Global Construction Materials Index, effective Dec. 1, 2026.

The index will represent the weighted value of a basket of key construction materials and will provide a transparent indicator of changes in construction material costs. The index will be calculated as a weighted average of its component assessments and would be expressed in US dollars per metric ton.

The Platts Construction Materials Index [ PCMIA00] will include the following Platts assessments:

Commodity Assessment Symbol Currency/UoM Conversion Factor Assessment frequency Weighting in Index
Hot-rolled coil Platts TSI US HRC EXW Indiana STHRI00 USD/short ton 1.102311 Daily 45.1%
Ferrous scrap Platts TSI HMS 1/2 80:20 CFR Turkey TS01011 USD/mt Daily 17.7%
Steel rebar Steel Rebar FOB Turkey STCBM00 USD/mt Daily 19.6%
Cement Platts CEMDEX FOB Turkey ACEMF00 USD/mt Weekly 17.6%

The index will combine assessments representing key segments of the construction materials value chain, including finished steel products, steelmaking feedstocks, reinforcing steel and cement.

Weightings are designed to reflect the relative economic significance of each commodity within the global construction materials market. The methodology considers both prices and demand characteristics to provide broad representation across major construction material categories.

The following table details the sources of the demand figures used to calculate the weightings of each commodity:

Commodity Weighting Basis Source
Hot-Rolled Coil (HRC) Global flat steel demand World Steel Association
Ferrous Steel Scrap Global steel scrap consumption Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) and World Steel Association
Steel Reinforcing Bar (Rebar) Global long steel demand (used as a proxy for rebar consumption) World Steel Association
Cement Global cement demand United States Geological Survey (USGS)

Demand data will be reviewed periodically and may be updated as part of the annual weighting review process. Where commodity-specific consumption data is not available, representative industry proxies may be used.

The Construction Materials Index will be calculated daily and published in US dollars per metric ton.

The index will be available through S&P Global Energy Core.
