Platts clarifies its methodology for Chicken CIF Jebel Ali assessments
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, would like to clarify its methodology for delivery-port and freight data used in its CIF Jebel Ali poultry assessments for chicken shawarma, breast, griller and leg quarters.
Due to the vessel transit disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, few poultry shipments have reached Jebel Ali since April 2026, UAE, the basis port for these assessments. Most bids, offers and trades heard by Platts have instead been for delivery to Khor Fakkan, also in the UAE
For the Middle East chicken assessment purposes, Platts may include pricing information from other regional ports or destination prices and normalize them to Jebel Ali using the most recently observed land freight data. For example, if Platts heard a $1,500 per container freight rate on a 27 metric ton container shipped inland to Jebel Ali from Khor Fakkan. It might normalize the assessment to Jebel Ali by adding $55/mt, based on a per metric ton calculation.
Normalization is an essential price adjustment technique used to align reported market information with the base standard reflected in Platts price assessments, as detailed in the methodology & specification guide, available here .
