Platts proposes to revise bunker fuel consumption of compliant fuels for tanker and dry bulk assessments, effective Jan. 4

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, proposes to revise bunker fuel consumption effective Jan. 4, 2027, for key dry bulk and tanker assessments that involve Emission Control Areas (ECA) and ECA distances.

Currently, bunker fuel consumption calculations reflect the use of compliant fuel, in line with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI, Regulation 14, which establishes a sulfur limit of 0.5% for fuel oil used outside ECAs and 0.1% sulfur within ECAs.

Under the proposed approach, the adjustment would reflect the bunker fuel consumption based on updated ECA and non-ECA distances for all assessed routes, including the designation of the Mediterranean Sea as an ECA under the MARPOL Annex VI on May 1, 2025.
