Platts proposes to launch Platts Construction Materials Index Dec. 1, 2026
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, proposes to launch the Platts Global Construction Materials Index, effective Dec. 1, 2026.
The index would represent a global price based on a weighted basket of key construction materials and would provide a transparent indicator of changes in construction material costs.
This would be a daily weighted average index, published in $/mt, of the following component assessments:
| Commodity | Assessment | Symbol | Currency/UoM | Conversion Factor | Assessment frequency | Weighting in Index |
| Hot-rolled coil | Platts TSI US HRC EXW Indiana | STHRI00 | USD/short ton | 1.102311 | Daily | 45.10% |
| Ferrous scrap | Platts TSI HMS 1/2 80:20 CFRTurkey | TS01011 | USD/mt | Daily | 17.70% | |
| Steel rebar | Steel Rebar FOBTurkey | STCBM00 | USD/mt | Daily | 19.60% | |
| Cement | Platts CEMDEX FOBTurkey | ACEMF00 | USD/mt | Weekly | 17.60% |
The index would combine assessments representing key segments of the construction materials value chain, including finished steel products, steelmaking feedstocks, reinforcing steel and cement.
Weightings are designed to reflect the relative size of each commodity within the global construction sector by market capitalization, considering both prices and global demand/consumption.
The following table details the sources of the demand figures used to calculate the weightings of each commodity:
| Commodity | Weighting Basis | Source |
| Hot-Rolled Coil (HRC) | Global flat steel demand | World Steel Association |
| Ferrous Steel Scrap | Global steel scrap consumption | Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) and World Steel Association |
| Steel Reinforcing Bar (Rebar) | Global long steel demand (used as a proxy for rebar consumption) | World Steel Association |
| Cement | Global cement demand | United States Geological Survey (USGS) |
Demand data would be reviewed periodically and may be updated as part of the annual weighting review process. Where commodity-specific consumption data is not available, representative industry proxies may be used.
The index would be available on S&P Energy Core.
Details of Platts Global Commodity Indices methodology are available in the online specification guide, here: commodity-indices-specifications.pdf .
