Platts proposes amending freight calculation for Oman, Murban CFR North Asia crude assessments Nov. 2

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, is proposing to amend the freight calculation used in its daily Oman and Murban CFR North Asia crude assessments, effective Nov. 2, 2026.

Under the proposed change, Platts would use the daily VLCC Gulf of Oman-to-Far East freight assessment in $/mt (DOOEW00), which was launched Aug. 3, in its calculation of the outright price of Oman and Murban delivered into North Asia at 4:30 pm Singapore time (0830 GMT).

The proposed change would better reflect the shipping economics for the two grades, with Murban primarily loading from Fujairah port and Oman from Mina Al Fahal port outside the Strait of Hormuz.

Currently, the freight calculation is based on the daily VLCC Persian Gulf-to-Far East freight assessment in $/mt (TDAAB00).

The freight calculation would continue to use the conversion factor for metric tons to barrels, as applied to the grades, in line with their prevailing qualities. The conversion factors are currently 7.32 for Oman and 7.62 for Murban.

In line with this change, Platts is also proposing to use the daily VLCC Gulf of Oman-to-Far East worldscale freight assessment (DIOEW00) in the freight calculation for Murban in its Indonesian Minas, Cinta and Widuri crude market parity prices.

Under the current MPP methodology for Minas, Cinta and Widuri, Murban -- as one of five basket grades -- is normalized for delivery to Singapore, accounting for freight. This is currently calculated using the daily VLCC Persian Gulf-to-Singapore worldscale freight assessment (PFAOD00).
