Platts proposes to launch a daily FOB Indonesia alumina price assessment

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, is proposing to launch a new daily alumina spot price assessment on a FOB Indonesia basis, effective Nov. 2, 2026.

The proposed assessment would provide greater pricing transparency to the growing trade flows out of Indonesia and complement Platts' existing Alumina FOB Australia benchmark and suite of alumina assessments.

Indonesia's alumina refining capacity has increased significantly following the completion of expansion projects and production ramp-ups in recent years. The country's nameplate capacity is expected to reach 10.8 million metric tons/year in 2026, up 30% from 8.3 million mt/year in 2025, according to S&P Global Energy Horizons.

From January to July 2026, Indonesia's alumina exports totaled 3.3 million mt, up 17% year over year, according to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

The proposed assessment would reflect the following specifications:

Assessment description Quality Quantity Particle size Incoterm and locations Timing Payment terms UOM
Alumina FOB Indonesia Sandy calcined Metallurgical / Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA) 30,000 mt and 35,000 mt bulk max 12% -45 microns, min 88% +45 microns FOB Kijang or Kendawangan Shipment 14-60 days L/C 30 days, BL30 days $/mt

Information reported on cargoes with specifications that differ from those above may be normalized to Platts basis specifications, using price differentials surveyed in the market.

Platts is seeking specific feedback as to whether a single port or both Kijang and Kendawangan ports should form the basis location specification in its proposal, to which data points are normalized. This considers how, in the case where the specification contains two ports, freight differences for cargoes loading at each could give rise to differing FOB prices.

The proposed daily assessment would follow the Singapore publishing calendar and reflect spot market information up to the close of the assessment window at 5:30 pm Singapore time (0930 GMT).

The assessment would be published in Platts Metals Daily, on pages MTL0005 and PMA0005 of Platts Nonferrous Metals Alert (PMA), and in the Platts price database.

Platts invites feedback, comments and questions on this proposal to platts_alumina_moc@spglobal.com and pricegroup@spglobal.com by Sept. 28, 2026.
