Platts consults market on European aluminum methodology

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, is seeking market feedback on its methodology for European aluminum as it updates incoterms for Aluminum in-Warehouse Rotterdam assessments to FCA from January 2027.

Specifically, Platts is looking for inputs on, but not limited to, the following in regard to the European aluminum duty-paid (AALVE00) and duty-unpaid assessment (AALVI00):

  • Net cash payment terms (e.g. cash against conditional release versus cash against documents)
  • Quotational period, pricing and delivery terms based on the exact timing, release and loading window on an FCA Rotterdam basis
  • Standard volume range (currently 100-1,000 metric tons)
  • Standard load points and whether they should be limited to specific warehouse locations in Rotterdam
  • Differentiation between LME and non-LME grade material
  • Minimum and maximum alloys beyond the current quality of min. 99.7% high-grade P1020A
  • Inclusion of additional dimensions and larger shapes (e.g. sows, T-bars, etc.) alongside ingots
  • High-low price assessment range versus a single close price assessment
  • Reflecting carbon intensity data in the range Platts publishes based on the smelter's energy production pathway (e.g. coal, renewables, etc.), or in CO2 equivalent/mt of aluminum produced

Currently, Platts publishes a high-low assessment range and a mid-point taking into account pricing information received.

More details of the European aluminum methodology can be found in the Global Nonferrous Metals guide, available at this link.
