Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will update the reference carbon intensity for Canadian ethanol price assessments, effective Sept. 15.
The Environmental and Climate Change Canada finalized its Clean Fuel Regulations quarterly credit market report for 2024 on July 15. In the report, the ECCC provides the weighted average CI of imported and produced low-carbon fuels by quarter, including ethanol. The weighted averages for imported and produced ethanol are as follows:
| Q1 2024 | Q2 2024 | Q3 2024 | Q4 2024 |
| 43.20 gCO2e/MJ | 42.50 gCO2e/MJ | 40.10 gCO2e/MJ | 39.50 gCO2e/MJ |
Platts will update the reference CI from 51.60 gCO2e/MJ to 39.50 gCO2e/MJ, reflecting the Q4 2024 weight average CI of imported and produced ethanol in Canada.
The reference CI represents the CI level of Platts Canadian ethanol assessments. Market participants can calculate the value of ethanol with a different CI by using the CFR CI cost per gallon and CFR Carbon Credit CC2 assessments.
This change will impact the following assessments and associated averages and conversions.
| Assessment name | Symbol |
| Ethanol delivered Toronto (US cents/gal) | BFEAT00 |
| Ethanol delivered Toronto (CAN cents/liter) | BFEBT00 |
| Ethanol delivered Toronto Monthly Avg (US cents/gal) | BFEAT03 |
| Ethanol delivered Toronto Monthly Avg (CAN cents/liter) | BFEBT03 |
Platts will seek to update the reference CI for its Canadian ethanol price assessments as new data on prevailing values becomes available. Platts will communicate any proposed changes via subscriber notes.
To keep track of proposed and implemented changes, please reference the Platts Biofuelscan, Fuel Ethanol Report, alert page PBF1500, and Platts Connect.
