Platts proposes changing minimum quantity specifications for European ferroalloy assessments, seeks feedback on additional specifications

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, is proposing lowering the minimum quantity specifications reflected in European ferroalloy assessments, effective Nov. 2, 2026, and is seeking feedback on additional specifications.

This means that the volume specifications for a number of European ferroalloy assessments would reflect a lower minimum threshold, reflective of current trading dynamics observed in the European ferroalloy spot market.

This follows market feedback and observations that spot liquidity in the European ferroalloys market has evolved in recent years, with a growing proportion of transactions concluded at volumes below the thresholds currently reflected in Platts methodologies.

Platts would revise the quantity specifications as follows:

Assessment Code Current Quantity Proposed Quantity
Ferrosilicon 75% Std DDP NWE AAIUR00 200-800 mt Minimum 50 mt
Silicomanganese 65% Mn DDP NWE AAITQ00 300-1,000 mt Minimum 50 mt
Ferromanganese 76% Mn DDP NWE AFERA04 Minimum four truckloads Minimum 50 mt
Ferrochrome 65% Cr High Carbon DDP NWE MMAIQ00 200-500 mt Minimum 50 mt
Charge Chrome 52% DDP NWE MMAIP00 200-500 mt Minimum 100 mt

The following assessments would be impacted:

Assessment Code
Ferrosilicon 75% Std DDP NWE AAIUR00
Silicomanganese 65% Mn DDP NWE AAITQ00
Ferromanganese 76% Mn DDP NWE AFERA04
Ferrochrome 65% Cr High Carbon DDP NWE MMAIQ00
Charge Chrome 52% DDP NWE MMAIP00

The proposed changes would not impact Platts' Ferrochrome 60-64.99% Low-Carbon and Ferrochrome 65-70% Low-Cabron volume specifications.

Additionally, Platts is seeking market feedback on additional specifications reflected in its European ferroalloy assessments, following recent observations that trading practices in the European ferroalloys market may have evolved. Platts has received initial market feedback suggesting that certain methodology specifications may benefit from further clarification or review to ensure assessments continue to reflect prevailing spot market activity.

Specifically, Platts is seeking feedback on whether the current standard volume, physical/chemical specifications, and units of measure reflected in its European ferroalloy assessments remain representative of material commonly traded in the European spot market.

Specifications under review:

  • Delivery timing
  • Payment terms
  • Incoterms
  • Location
  • Whether assessments should continue to be expressed on a contained-metal basis or as a price per metric ton of material
  • Inclusion of additional grades through normalization
  • Relevance of impurities threshold as per the specifications listed above.
