Platts launches European SAF Cost of Abatement Price Assessment May 11

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, has launched a daily assessment for European Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Cost of Abatement Price effective May 11, 2026.

The SAF cost of abatement assessment reflects the implied cost per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions avoided when substituting fossil-based Jet A-1 with neat SAF, based on Platts SAF FOB FARAG (SUAFB00) and standardized lifecycle emissions assumptions.

The new assessment follows market feedback, highlighting demand for a transparent and standardized index, amid diverging methodologies used by market participants.

The assessment is expressed in $/metric tons of CO2 equivalent, enabling standardized comparison across fuel pathways and decarbonization options. The assessment is published daily and reflect a 4:30 pm London time market close, following the London publishing calendar.

The assessment incorporates differences in fuel energy content by applying net heat of combustion values of 42.8 megajoule/kilogram for Jet A-1, in line with minimum ASTM D1655 specifications, and 44 MJ/kg for HEFA-SPK as defined under Annex III, Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (Renewable Energy Directive), as amended (latest consolidated version 2024).

Carbon intensity assumptions are based on the EU Renewable Energy Directive fossil fuel comparator, with jet A-1 assigned a baseline value of 94 grams of CO2 equivalent/MJ. HEFA-SPK is modeled using a lifecycle greenhouse gas reduction of 80%, resulting in a carbon intensity of 18.8 gCO2e/MJ.

Example Calculation (based on Platts SAF FOB FARAG barge assessment published Jan. 21, 2026):

• 94 gCO2e/MJ (CI) multiplied by 0.8 (greenhouse gas) = 75.2 gCO2e/MJ avoided
• 75.2 gCO2e/MJ multiplied by 44,000 (HEFA-SPK Energy in MJ/mt) = 3,308,800 gCO2e/mt
• 3,308,800 divided by a million = 3.30 mtCO2e
• 3.30 mtCO2e divided by 1.02803 (accounting for difference in calorific value) = 3.21 mtCO2e
• $1,540/mt divided by 3.21 mtCO2e = $479.75/mtCO2e (SAF Cost of Abatement price)
