Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, proposes to launch a new weekly CFR Southeast Asia steel plate price assessment, effective June 3, 2026.
The new assessment follows market feedback and would reflect growing steel plate imports in Southeast Asia.
The region imported 2.9 million metric tons of plate in 2025, up from 1.5 million mt in 2021, according to data by S&P Global Market Intelligence's Global Trade Atlas.
Vietnam was the top Southeast Asian importer of plate in 2025, with volumes having risen 118% over the same period to 1.7 million mt, accounting for 60% of the region's imports.
The proposed basis specifications of the assessment are:
| Assessment | Quality | Quantity | Dimensions | Incoterm | Location | Timing | Payment terms | Unit |
| Plate CFR Southeast Asia | SS400, Q235 or other equivalent grade | 500-3,000 mt | W 1,500-2,000 mm; T 14-40 mm | CFR | Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam | 8-12 weeks | L/C at sight | $/mt |
The weekly assessment would be time-stamped at 5:30 pm Singapore time every Wednesday, based on trades, bids, offers and other indications of value reported to Platts.
The proposed assessment would complement Platts' existing plate assessments on an FOB China and CFR East Asia basis.
The assessment would be published on fixed pages STL/PMA 1370 of the real-time Platts Steel Alert and Platts Metals Alert, in the Steel Price Report, and in the Platts price database.
Platts invites feedback, comments and questions on this proposal by April 21 to pl_asia_steel@spglobal.com and pricegroup@spglobal.com.
