Platts updates California and Texas battery storage energy systems' regional capacities

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, wishes to inform the market that it updated the installed battery storage energy systems (BESS) capacities for the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), effective Feb. 26.

Updated capacities apply to the following Hubs and Zones:

  • CAISO NP15 Generation Hub
  • CAISO SP15 Generation Hub
  • ERCOT North Load Zone
  • ERCOT South Load Zone
  • ERCOT West Load Zone

Platts utilized publicly available capacity data from both ISOs. This data is used to calculate average BESS unit profits, costs, and revenues in energy-only markets.

The impacted indices can be found at the link here.

Platts also wishes to clarify that, going forward, it will update the underlying BESS capacities on a seasonal basis and will alert the market ahead of any such changes.

Platts tracks revenues and costs for system operators throughout the day (hours 1-24) using battery storage charge and discharge output, as well as hourly ISO prices. Additionally, Platts calculates final net revenues for the day and publishes a spread between positive and negative values:

  • Positive values indicate profits earned from discharging batteries (not participating in ancillary services) into the grid.
  • Negative values represent losses or costs associated with charging energy from the grid.
  • Final net revenues reflect the difference between profits and costs.

The indices are published in Megawatt Daily, Energy Trader, and Alert Pages PEA3051 and AGP3051.
