Energy Transition, Carbon, Emissions
January 02, 2026
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, proposes to launch project-specific price assessments to capture the value of carbon credits from nature-based avoidance projects in Southeast Asia, effective March 2, 2026.
These new assessments would better capture the price differentiation between different REDD+ projects, which show considerable variation in value.
The nature-based avoidance category primarily comprises REDD+ projects. REDD+ refers to "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation," with the "+" encompassing conservation, sustainable forest management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
However, Platts has observed considerable price differentiation within REDD+ projects driven by the underlying AFOLU (Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use) activity. AFOLU represents a category of activities that influence greenhouse gas emissions through land-use changes. Within REDD+, AFOLU activities are a primary determinant of price differentiation due to their impact on project complexity, permanence, leakage risk and co-benefits such as biodiversity and community development.
As such, Platts proposes to launch the following assessments, with the specifications listed below:
| Name of assessment | Primary AFOLU activity | Minimum volume | Maximum volume | Vintage | Delivery |
| Platts REDD Katingan CY | Avoided Planned Deforestation | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2020 | Current Year |
| Platts REDD Keo Seima CY | Avoided Unplanned Deforestation | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2019-2021 | Current Year |
| Platts IFM Kuamut (Removals) CY | Improved Forest Management (Removals) | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2020-2023 | Current Year |
| Platts IFM Kuamut (Avoidance) CY | Improved Forest Management (Avoidance) | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2020-2023 | Current Year |
Platts WRC Sumatra Merang CY | Wetland Restoration and Conservation (WRC) | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2019-2020 | Current Year |
| Platts REDD Rimba Raya CY | Avoided Planned Deforestation | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2017-2019 | Current Year |
| Platts REDD Southern Cardamom CY | Avoided Unplanned Deforestation | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2019-2021 | Current Year |
| Platts REDD Tumring CY | Avoided Planned Deforestation | 5,000 mt | 50,000 mt | 2019 | Current Year |
The assessments would have the following specifications:
