The new tungsten rush: UK, US look to secure supply chain

A new tungsten rush is underway.

From missiles and submarines to semiconductors, tungsten is critical to modern industry and national defense. China accounted for nearly 79% of global mined tungsten in 2025.

After Beijing tightened export controls, governments and companies accelerated efforts to develop alternative sources and build more resilient supply chains outside China.

New supply is emerging, though projects are at different stages of development. 

South Korea’s Sangdong mine has been cleared for commercial processing, with phase one expected to produce about 2,300 metric tons of tungsten concentrate a year.

In the UK, Tungsten West is restarting the Hemerdon mine, and Nevada’s Springer complex is advancing. Together, these projects could increase tungsten ore and concentrate supply outside China.

Vietnam’s Masan is expanding tungsten oxide capacity under its agreement with producer Elmet. It will supply about 1,250 metric tons of tungsten trioxide equivalent annually and provide refining and conversion services at its Vietnamese facilities.

Together, the companies are building a supply chain that covers mining, refining, conversion and industrial production outside China.

The race is no longer just for mines. It is for a complete, allied mine-to-market supply chain outside China.
