Electrifying the mining sector – progress or plateau?

Mining giants are stepping up electrification, replacing diesel fleets with battery-powered trucks and integrating renewables. It’s not just about decarbonization; it’s also about slashing costs. 

For example, Fortescue signed a $4 billion deal to electrify its Pilbara fleet, a massive bet on battery trucks. But here’s the catch: the infrastructure isn’t ready yet.  

BHP just delayed its diesel fleet phase-out to post-2030, citing a lack of tech readiness. Rio Tinto is also pointing to electrification challenges and focusing its investments to help the technology mature. 

So, renewables may cut 50% of mining emissions, but full decarbonization hinges on solving diesel displacement, especially in haul trucks. Accelerating technology development, through policy incentives, targeted R&D funding, or federal grants, could speed up the tech curve.
