North America’s rare earth race: strategic urgency, slow build

Since the latest US–China summit in mid-May, the industry had expected pressure on rare earths to ease quickly. But the reality is that the talks do not solve North America’s supply-chain challenge.

The talks could help the US industry in the short term by keeping trade channels open and reducing the risk of shipment delays. But the data shows why this relief is fragile.

Over the last two years, Chinese monthly exports of rare earth magnets have remained high, underscoring the world’s continued reliance on China’s magnet supply.

At the same time, despite efforts to diversify, China remains a major source of rare earth materials flowing into the US market.

Export licensing, technology restrictions and controls on dual-use materials can still disrupt US manufacturers.

Talks can buy time, but they do not create domestic capacity. The real bottleneck is processing, not just mining.

For North America, project ramp targets still point to 2030 and 2032. Between now and then, the industry must build the full ecosystem: mining, processing, sustainability and transparent pricing.
