Neste, United Airlines extend SAF supply deal across US and Europe

Finnish renewable fuels producer Neste and United Airlines have extended their sustainable aviation fuel supply agreement covering two of the key hubs — Chicago O'Hare in the United States and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the Netherlands, Neste said Sept. 16.
The extended contract covers deliveries of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel blended with conventional jet fuel. Deliveries to Amsterdam began in June 2026 and ran through August 2026, while supplies to Chicago O'Hare started in July 2026 and are planned to continue until June 2027, Neste said in a statement.
The agreement reinforces a supply relationship that stretches back to at least 2022, when United first began using Neste MY SAF at Schiphol, and builds on United's distinction as the first airline globally to fly on blended SAF in regular commercial operations, the statement said.
SAF commands a significant premium to jet fuel. Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed SAF on a CIF basis in Northwest Europe at $3,062.75/metric ton Sept. 15, a $1,359.75/mt premium to jet cargoes on an equivalent basis.
Global SAF demand is forecast to reach 80,000 b/d in 2027, driven by higher demand in the UK and Asia, analysts at S&P Global Horizons said Sept. 7.
Scaling ambitions
The deal comes as United sharply accelerated its SAF consumption in 2025, using more than 83,000 metric tons — roughly 27.7 million gallons — a 104% increase over the prior year, according to the press release. That volume made United the largest SAF user among major US airlines in 2025, based on publicly available reports cited by Neste.
"Continuing our work with Neste across two continents reflects a shared conviction that SAF is available and capable of being scalable," said Lauren Riley, Chief Sustainability Officer at United Airlines.
Neste has a global SAF production capability of 1.5 million mt/year and is targeting an expansion to 2.2 million mt by 2027, when a capacity expansion at its Rotterdam refinery is scheduled for completion, according to the press release.
