China's Yunnan Jianfeng Dazhan Cement has begun commissioning a new 4,000 metric ton/day clinker production line in southwestern Yunnan province after the facility was ignited on Oct. 11, its parent company Jianfeng Group said in a statement Oct. 12.
The project, located in Mengla County, represents an investment of about 997 million yuan ($149 million) and was developed under China's capacity replacement framework, which requires new capacity to replace older production assets, Jianfeng said.
The company added that construction of the main production line is largely complete, and the project has now entered the integrated commissioning stage.
The line was designed to meet ultra-low emissions standards and is part of its strategy to upgrade and expand its building materials business while improving overall competitiveness, according to the company.
Jianfeng said additional testing and commissioning work will be required before commercial operations begin, adding that the project's future profitability will depend on factors including construction demand, raw material costs, industry policies and broader economic conditions.
Several Asia-based producers and traders said Chinese clinker exports have gained momentum in recent months, as weak domestic demand prompted producers to expand their presence in overseas markets.
Traders cited stronger buying interest from South Asia and West Africa. Data from S&P Global Market Intelligence's Global Trade Atlas showed China's clinker exports to Bangladesh, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon totaled 3.44 million mt over June-August, up 258% from 961,000 mt a year earlier.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, last assessed ASTM Type I cement FOB Vietnam at $39/mt on Oct. 8, up from $38.50/mt the previous week. Platts assessed clinker FOB Vietnam at $33.50/mt, up from $32.50/mt over the same period.
