First project to restore 800 ha in Barngarla Country
Move expands Qantas' nature-based carbon portfolio
Qantas announced an A$30 million partnership with Greening Australia and Conscious Investment Management to restore cleared land in South Australia, with the first project targeting nearly 800 hectares on Barngarla Country on the Eyre Peninsula, Hayley Alchin, Qantas executive manager for climate strategy, finance and reporting, said Oct. 20.
"We cannot do this alone," Alchin said, announcing the partnership at the Australasian Emissions Reduction Summit 2026 in Adelaide.
The investment aims to generate native afforestation-based environmental planting ACCUs, according to Alchin.
Alchin did not provide details on the investment structure, project timeline or expected ACCU generation from the restoration project.
Greening Australia is an environmental restoration nonprofit, while Conscious Investment Management is an Australia-based impact investment fund manager.
The announcement builds on Qantas' existing investments in nature-based carbon projects, including its participation as a foundational investor in the Silva Carbon Origination Fund in 2024.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed environmental planting ACCUs at A$54.00/metric ton of CO2 equivalent on Oct. 21, down 25 cents/mtCO2e day over day, at a premium of A$16.25/mtCO2e over the Platts benchmark generic ACCU price.
