Japan's Blue Impulse to fly on Cosmo's domestic SAF blend in Sept. 19 display

Blue Impulse, the aerobatic team of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, will perform an aerial display over Aichi prefecture in central Japan on Sept. 19 using fuel blended with domestically produced sustainable aviation fuel.

Cosmo Oil Marketing, a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings, supplied domestic SAF to Blue Impulse through Aichi prefecture and its capital city, Nagoya, Cosmo Energy Holdings said in a statement Sept. 14.

Blue Impulse will demonstrate its performance over Aichi prefecture from 9:10 am local time on Sept. 19 (GMT 0010) to 9:55 am to commemorate the 2026 Asian Games and the 5th Asian Para Games 2026, according to a statement from Nagoya city on Sept. 11.

Nagoya city started supplying SAF to airplanes at Chubu Centrair International Airport in central Japan in fiscal year 2026-27 (April-March) as part of an agreement with Chubu Centrair International Airport, JGC Holdings Corp., REVO International and Saffaire Sky Energy.

Domestic SAF supplied to Blue Impulse at Chubu Centrair International Airport is made from household used cooking oil collected in Nagoya city and processed using Saffaire Sky Energy's manufacturing equipment at Cosmo Oil's Sakai refinery in western Japan.

Cosmo Oil, Japan's third-largest refiner, is a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings.

JGC Holdings Corp., Cosmo Oil and REVO International jointly established Saffaire Sky Energy in November 2022 to produce SAF. The Sakai refinery can produce about 30,000 kiloliters/year of SAF.

Cosmo Oil, Cosmo Oil Marketing and Saffaire Sky Energy obtained ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU certifications in December 2024.

Japan plans to replace 10% of jet fuel used by domestic airlines with SAF by 2030.

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed SAF (HEFA-SPK) FOB Straits at $2,549/mt on Sept. 11, up $9/mt, or 0.4%, from the previous assessment.
