Middle East disruption shifts view toward Asia for supply

Changing distributor and storage structures against static demand backdrop

Preference for freely negotiated pricing emerges amid feedstock volatility

The European methyl methacrylate (MMA) market is having to adapt to new supply dynamics as contract negotiations for 2027 get underway, industry players said at European Petrochemical Association (EPCA) conference held in Vienna Oct. 5-8.

Ongoing supply disruption from the Middle East was a key point of discussion at the industry gathering, especially as a new distribution agreement between Mitsubishi and Mitsui for methacrylates in Europe embeds itself in the market.

With the closure of Trinseo's 100,000 mt/year MMA plant in Italy at the end of 2025, the Middle East has become an increasingly important source of supply in Europe. But since the start of the US-Iran conflict, there has been hesitancy among buyers to expose themselves to volatility in the region, causing many to shift their sights towards Asia.

The supply disruption has also threatened to leave some European suppliers short of material, particularly with Middle Eastern producers becoming more selective about supply allocations in favor of fulfilling contracts directly with customers.

This represented an especially positive development for distributors with access to Chinese and South Korean material, who have seen opportunities to capitalize on this anxiety and take market share.

Nevertheless, it is tricky timing for Asian producers who, despite having established structural supply flows into Europe during recent years, are having to contend with elevated feedstock costs stemming from the war in the Middle East that have eroded regional production rates and global price competitiveness.

Narrow MTBE-MMA spreads have further compounded the pressure, prompting integrated producers to divert MTBE into the gasoline-blending pool amid wide gasoline-naphtha spreads, reducing MMA export availability and pushing prices higher.

Platts last assessed the FOB China MMA spot price at $1,755/mt and CFR Southeast Asia price at $1,900/mt on Oct. 6.

There have also been several entries and exits from the European market heard in the pipeline for 2027. One distributor said they had provided notice on their MMA tanks, with the intention of handling only iso containers going forward. At the same time, a less established supplier was heard to have taken out tank storage, illustrating a changing supply landscape in Europe.

This has presented opportunities for Europe's single remaining producer, Roehm, to position itself as a custodian of supply security, with some buyers describing an "aggressive" approach toward 2027 contracting.

However, demand forecasts for the coming year are broadly flat amid limited expectations for growth in the end markets, namely automotive and construction.

A trend toward freely negotiated pricing also became clear as buyers looked to decouple from feedstock indexes, which have proved volatile during 2026.

Platts last assessed the 3-30 day forward DDP NWE methyl methacrylate spot price at €2,090/mt Oct. 9, up €132.50/mt on the month.
