Clean Energy Procurement Service

Power your clean energy procurement strategy with unparalleled global data, analytics, and insights

Sourcing clean energy to operate industrial and commercial facilities under corporate net-zero commitments is not an easy task. Markets, technologies, and policies are evolving at a fast pace, and companies taking up this new and urgent challenge – locally or across countries or regions – need a constant stream of reliable data to optimally plan and procure clean energy.

However, data and information across the world is rarely standardized, either by format or language, which makes it difficult to discern meaningful insights to choose the best clean energy option for your company. Forming the right clean energy procurement strategy can take hundreds of hours or require expensive outsourcing to consultancies.

That's where we come in. Wherever you are, the Clean Energy Procurement Service from S&P Global Commodity Insights can help guide you. Our unparalleled data and analysis will help you develop a strategy on sourcing renewable energy that is tailored to your operational needs.

Your Challenges to Switching to Clean Energy

Corporations looking to source 100% renewable energy in or outside of their home region frequently encounter various operational, cost, pricing, and regulatory challenges such as:

  • Difficulty acquiring information on the different energy market landscapes and regulatory frameworks
  • Not knowing the emissions intensity of electricity supplied from a region's grid
  • Needing to choose the best options available in different regions to source renewable power purchase agreements (PPAs) or renewable energy certificates (RECs)
  • Not having access to the market prices and costs to get to net-zero emissions
  • Not having insight into regulatory risks and how they can be addressed when negotiating PPAs
  • Lacking local knowledge and/or facing language barriers
  • Having to sift through vast data sources to search for reliable information

Our Solutions Help You Reach 100% Renewable Energy Faster

So how to begin? Our unparalleled data and deep insights across the energy, economy, commodities and financial markets help you navigate the path from net-zero commitment to net-zero action, creating long-term sustainable value.

We help you take the first steps on your journey to sustainability goals:

  • Talk to our experts and read their research and analysis reports
  • Assess market and regulatory risks to better determine which renewable energy purchasing options — such as direct PPAs, on-site generation, or renewable energy certificates (RECs) — are best suited to your operational requirements
  • Uncover what your peers are doing in the region
  • Understand the costs and advantages of switching to renewable energy

Analytics

Corporate Renewable Contracts

Knowing the market size and players is key to start. The Corporate Renewable Contracts dashboard helps you:

  • Explore the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contract database, which provides details on the type of arrangement, supply source (project name and developer), contract capacity, volumes, etc.
  • Analyze the clean energy procurement deals across the globe including North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia-Pacific (India, China, South Korea, Australia etc.)
  • Compare the different types of PPAs across markets and their trends by size, age, and technology
  • Review the procurement activity by sector and the off-takers that dominate the space

Power Prices

Assessing market risks is a crucial component in forming a renewable procurement strategy and negotiating contracts. The power analytics dashboards allow you to analyze market trends and provide flexibility to compare across markets and technologies. They provide:

  • Long-term outlooks on the wholesale power price with the sub-regional deviations (India and Mainland China) and hourly trends (for select markets) across the globe
  • Historical information on retail tariffs that allows you to assess the cost savings, especially in Asian markets where finding this information can be difficult
  • Global outlooks for power demand, supply (including renewable energy penetration levels), and installed capacity up until 2050

Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE)

The levelized cost of electricity is a key benchmark for corporations planning to invest in and develop projects for self-consumption. The LCOE dashboard provides the cost of generation outlook (2022-2050) by technology, region, and year.

This dashboard can be used for ROI projections and to analyze capital and operating cost trends to the year 2050. The technologies evaluated include conventional, renewable and energy storage alternatives.

Power Supply and Demand

View power supply, demand, and capacity by region and technology.

Grid Emissions and Carbon Intensity

To assess your carbon footprints — particularly your scope 2 emissions — in the markets where you operate, the dashboard displays the carbon intensiveness of grid-sourced electricity.

You can use historical and future trends on the grid emission intensity, as well as the renewable penetration available for markets across the globe with sub-regional information (North America, India, and Mainland China) as a reference guide for the commercial and industrial hubs.

Global Renewable Market Attractiveness Rankings

How are the markets adopting renewable energy and at what pace?

Which is the most attractive renewable market for investments?

These are some of the key questions that can be answered through our expert analysis comparing markets at the regional/country level. Our experts assess different markets and technologies using a coherent set of scoring parameters and depending on risk appetite and business interests. Scoring parameters vary from the competitive landscape to regulatory stability, ownership hurdles, expected returns, and more.
