Platts proposes to update USWC petcoke market assessments

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, seeks feedback on a proposal to amend its low-and mid-high sulfur US West Coast petroleum coke (petcoke) market reporting by modifying low-and mid-high sulfur assessments, for its petcoke price assessment series, effective Dec . 1, 2025.

This proposal results from research and market engagement to align with standard specifications seen in the market, covering gaps in sulfur specifications for assessments between petcoke grades defined by sulfur content.

Platts is proposing to update the sulfur range of its FOB US West Coast Mid-Sulfur Petcoke assessment from 2.5%-4.5% to 3%-5%.

Likewise, Platts is also proposing to update the sulfur range of its FOB US West Coast Low-Sulfur petcoke assessment from 1%-2.5% to 1%-2.9%. The proposed price assessment ranges reflect the values for FOB USWC petcoke cargoes with typical 2% and 4.5% sulfur specifications, with an assessed 2% petcoke covering a range between 1%-2.9%, and 3%-5% for the 4.5% assessment in $ per metric ton.

The proposed specification updates are as follows:

SymbolAssessment DescriptionCurrent Sulfur RangeProposed Sulfur Range
CPAAC00FOB US West Coast Mid-Sulfur Petcoke2.5%-4.5%3%-5%
CPAGG00FOB US West Coast Low-Sulfur Petcoke1%-2.5%1%-2.9%

The proposed updates would also include the related monthly and quarterly averages.

The assessments would continue to reflect cargoes of at least 10,000 mt. Cargoes of other grades, qualities and locations may be normalized for assessment purposes.

Specifications for FOB US Gulf Coast petcoke assessments would remain unchanged.

Platts FOB USWC petcoke assessments appear in Platts Coal Trader, Platts Coal Trader International, and on Platts Service Page Numbers GCI0961 and GCN0961. Full details of Platts petcoke assessments can be found in the Global Coal Specifications Guide.
