Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, clarifies the calorific values used to calculate fuel emission factors in its FuelEU Maritime CO2 abatement assessments and has updated the calorific value used for fuel oil from Oct. 1.
Platts clarifies that the calorific values used for the fossil fuel components in its FuelEU CO2 abatement assessments reflect those outlined in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 of the European Parliament.
Previously, Platts utilized a calorific value of 0.041 MJ/g for fuel oil and a calorific value of 0.0427 MJ/g for marine gasoil. For UCOME, Platts utilizes a calorific value of 37 MJ/kg, as per the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
From Oct. 1, the Platts calculated CO2 abatement assessments utilize a calorific value of 0.0405 MJ/g for fuel oil, based on market feedback. There are otherwise no changes to the calorific values used for other types of fuels in the calculation of fuel emission factors.
The update to the calorific value used for fuel oil from Oct. 1 affects the following assessments:
| Assessment | Symbol | Monthly Average |
| FuelEU CO2 abatement B30 Rotterdam (VLSFO) | MGVLD00 | MGVLD03 |
| FuelEU CO2 abatement B30 Rotterdam (MGO) | MGVLE00 | MGVLE03 |
| FuelEU CO2 abatement UCOME Rotterdam (VLSFO) | MGVLB00 | MGVLB03 |
| FuelEU CO2 abatement B24 Singapore (VLSFO) | MGVLF00 | MGVLF03 |
