Platts to launch Global Battery Metals Index Oct. 1, 2025

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will launch the Platts Global Battery Metals Index, effective Oct. 1, 2025.

The index will represent a global price of Platts key physical assessments of battery metals, used in electric vehicle production.

Details of the new index and symbols are as follows:

SymbolDescriptionCurrency/UoM
PGBMI00Platts Global Battery Metals Index$/mt
PGBMI03Platts Global Battery Metals Index Monthly Average$/mt

This will be a daily weighted average index, in $/mt, using the following component assessments:

CommodityPlatts AssessmentSymbolCurrency/UoMWeighting in index
CobaltCobalt Sulfate CIF North AsiaBATCO04$/mt12.51%
ManganeseManganese Sulfate DDP ChinaBATMT00$/mt15.11%
NickelNickel Sulfate calculated price CIF Northeast AsiaBATNC00$/mt62.55%
LithiumLithium Spodumene 6.0% Li2O FOB AustraliaBATSP03$/mt4.915%
LithiumLithium Hydroxide CIF North AsiaBATLA00$/mt4.915%

The weighting of each commodity reflects its proportional weight of material consumed in the commercial production of an average NMC811 battery used for commercial electric vehicle manufacturing. The weightings reference the latest S&P Global Commodity Insights Electric Vehicle Metals Usage Data.

For lithium, Platts assumes an equal weighting between lithium spodumene and lithium hydroxide in the construction of the Global Battery Metals Index.

In addition, for lithium spodumene, Platts applies a Handysize Western Australia-China freight rate to the underlying FOB Australia assessment alongside a conversion factor and a tolling fee to account for the extraction and processing cost to a typical lithium smelter.

When a component assessment is not published on a particular day, the price published from the previous working day will be used in the calculation of the index.

The composition of the index basket and weightings will be reviewed at least annually and may be updated at other intervals to reflect evolving market conditions.

The index will be published on CI.com and in the Platts price database. Platts will also backfill the Global Battery Metals Index to Aug. 1, 2024, using the composition and weightings outlined above.
