Platts to discontinue several voluntary carbon market price assessments, Dec. 1

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will discontinue three of its voluntary carbon market price assessments, effective Dec. 1, 2025.

This follows a proposal note published on Aug. 28.

Platts will discontinue Platts CNC, as well as its Household Devices Energy Efficiency Project Differential, and the Renewable Energy Latin America Differential, owing to changing dynamics in the voluntary carbon market:

  • Platts CNC reflects the most competitively priced of all nature-based carbon credits, including nature-based standardized contracts. The discontinuation reflects declining liquidity for standardized products and instead a preference for credits from nature-based solutions with recognized performance and market acceptance. These credits are more typically traded in the OTC market, and market activity is captured within Platts separate Nature-Based Avoidance and Natural Carbon Capture price assessments.
  • Platts Household Devices Energy Efficiency Project Differential captures the discount or premium for carbon credits generated by Energy Efficiency projects such as, but not limited to, LED Lightbulb projects and improved building efficiency projects, versus Platts' Household Devices Current Year price assessment. The discontinuation reflects the limited circulation of Energy Efficiency credits in the market.
  • Platts Renewable Energy Latin America Differential reflects the discount or premium of Renewable Energy projects located in Latin America compared to the Platts Renewable Energy price assessment. This discontinuation reflects the decline in issuances of Renewable Energy carbon credits in Latin America and end-buyers' preferences for credits from other project types. Platts also recognizes that these credits usually trade as an outright value, rather than as a differential to credits from other regions.

The assessments to be discontinued are as follows:
