Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has discontinued its calculated Japan aluminum yen-conversion assessments effective Aug. 1.
These assessments are formula-based prices calculated using Platts Japan aluminum premium assessments, underlying London Metal Exchange settlements, the Japanese yen-US dollar exchange rate and metric ton-to-kilogram conversion.
The discontinuation reflects feedback that market participants prefer to apply their own calculations and exchange rates on a prevailing US dollar basis CIF Japan aluminum premium assessments, in part due to Japan's position as a significant net importer of aluminum.
The following assessments and symbols have been discontinued:
| DESCRIPTION | SYMBOL | WEEKLY AVERAGE |
| Alum Japan First Mo Ex-whse | MMALU00 | MMALU04 |
| Alum Japan Sec Mo Ex-whse | MMALX00 | MMALX04 |
| Aluminum Jpn InWhse Mo 3 Yen/Kg | MMAJW30 | |
| Aluminum Jpn InWhse Mo 4 Yen/Kg | MMAJW40 |
Platts initially proposed the change on April 16 and communicated the discontinuation on May 19 in a subscriber note available here.
Full specifications for Platts aluminum assessments are reflected in the specifications guide for Global Nonferrous Metals.
Platts Japan aluminum assessments are published in Metals Daily, Metals Weekly, on Platts Metals Alert on fixed pages PMA/MTL0107, PMA/MTL0108, PMA/MTL0419 and PMA/MTL0650 and in the Platts price database.
