Platts proposes ammonia-coal energy price spreads in Japan

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, proposes to launch energy price spreads between ammonia and thermal coal for Japan, effective Sept. 2, 2024.

These spreads would reflect the price difference between low-carbon ammonia and thermal coal delivered to Japan on an energy parity basis and represent the potential cost of fuel-switching for power generation in Japan. These energy price spreads would enable power generators to make an informed decision about switching from coal to ammonia, aligning with the government's vision of co-firing ammonia with coal to reduce carbon emissions.

Platts will publish the following spreads:

Renewable-derived ammonia ( GADAA04, GADAG04 and GADAC04 ) versus NEAT coal energy price ( JKTCB00 )

Japan Korea Ammonia Price, JKAP , ( AJKCB00 ) versus NEAT coal energy price ( JKTCB00 )

All assessments are for delivery into Japan. The spreads will be published daily in $/MMBtu, $/MWh, Yen/MWh at 16:30 PM London time.
