Platts to discontinue its Suezmax Iran loading premium tanker freight assessments Oct. 1

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will discontinue its Suezmax Iran loading premium tanker freight assessments due to extremely low spot market activity, effective Oct. 1, 2025.

Market feedback suggests that there is a significant lack of Iranian-related fixtures or cargoes, leading to a near absence of liquidity for the premium assessment.

According to S&P Global Commodities at Sea, from 2023 to date, 85% of Iranian crude transported was via VLCCs, while only 12% was transported using Suezmax ships. Suezmax usage saw a decline of 97% from 2017 to 2024.

The discontinuation was first proposed through a subscriber note on July 3: https://www.spglobal.com/commodity-insights/en/pricing-benchmarks/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/070325-platts-proposes-to-discontinue-its-suezmax-iran-loading-premium-tanker-freight-assessment-oct-1
