Platts proposes to discontinue Silicon 553 FOB China assessment

S&P Global Platts is proposing to discontinue its weekly Silicon 553 grade FOB China (MMAJF00) assessment effective October 1, 2020, due to changes in market liquidity and trading patterns.

Platts has observed a lack of clarity around the taxation values imposed on the majority of Silicon 553 trades reported, and as such, this assessment may no longer be fully reflective of actual market trade levels and may not best serve its purpose as an industry reference anymore.

The last assessment day would be September 29, 2020.

With this change, Platts would also cease to publish the monthly (MMAJF03) and quarterly (MMAJF16) averages of Silicon 553 grade.

The assessment is published in Platts real-time Metals Alert on the fixed page PMA407 and in the Platts price database under the codes listed above. There would be no changes to the Platts coverage of the Silicon 553 market in other regions.

Platts continues to research and review Silicon metal market trends for alternative price points and potential assessments that may be more suitable for assessment and relevant for the market moving forward.
