Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has launched daily carbon-accounted freight assessments on 38 dirty tanker and 42 clean tanker routes involving European Union ports effective July 1.
The assessments expand the suite of Aframax carbon-accounted tanker freight assessments on four European and two Americas routes launched Aug. 1, 2022 and Nov. 1, 2022, which can be referenced in subscriber methodology notes here and here.
The new carbon-accounted tanker freight assessments reflect spot values inclusive of EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) costs, following the March 1 amended methodology for the existing carbon-accounted freight assessments on the six Aframax routes launched in 2022. The subscriber methodology change launch note can be accessed with this link.
In line with EU Directive 2023/959 of May 10, 2023, the carbon-accounted freight assessments fully reflect the cost to offset:
•100% of carbon dioxide emissions for intra-EU voyages and time spent in European Economic Area (EEA) berths
•50% of carbon dioxide emissions for all inbound and outbound voyages between EU and non-EU member states
• 0% of carbon dioxide emissions, while the ship is in non-member state ports
The new carbon-accounted freight assessments reflect spot fixtures, bids and offers inclusive of EU ETS costs according to the European Parliament's phased-in approach as follows:
• 40% of emissions reported in 2024 payable in 2025
• 70% of emissions reported in 2025 payable in 2026
• 100% of emissions reported in 2026 payable in 2027
The new assessments for the global carbon-accounted assessments can be seen here.
The assessments will be published in the Platts Dirty Tankerwire , Platts Clean Tankerwire , Platts Dirty Tankerwire Monthly, Platts Clean Tankerwire Monthly, and on Platts Tanker Alert Pages: PGT2631, 2632, 2637, 2638, 2633, 2634, 2639, 2640, 2635, 2636, 2641, 2642, as well as Platts Shipping Alert Pages SHP2631, 2632, 2637, 2638, 2633, 2634, 2639, 2640, 2635, 2636, 2641, and 2642
