Platts to update Mexico rebar assessment, index specifications; increase index frequency

HIGHLIGHTS

Quality specifications to be aligned with industry standards

Index frequency to be aligned with weekly assessment

Monthly averages to be implemented for assessment, index

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will update the quality specifications of its weekly Rebar Mexico Domestic Production Delivered price assessment and its Rebar Mexico Domestic Production Delivered Index, effective Aug. 1, 2025.

Platts will also increase the frequency of its calculated monthly Rebar Mexico Domestic Production Delivered Index to weekly from monthly, effective Aug. 1.

Specifications

Platts will update the quality specification for both the assessment and index to NMX B-506 grade 42, from the current NMX C-407 grade 42. The change aligns the specification to the quality standard set by Canacero, the Mexican iron and steel chamber, and market feedback.

Additionally, Platts clarifies that the incoterm reflected in both the assessment and index is Delivered at Place (DAP).

All other specifications for the assessment and index will remain the same.

Index publication frequency

The Rebar Mexico Domestic Production Delivered Index tracks the percentage base value change in the monthly average of Platts Rebar Mexico Domestic Production Delivered price assessment. It is currently published on the first day of each month. It will now be published each Friday and track the percentage-based value change weekly.

The Rebar Mexico Domestic Production Delivered assessment will continue to be published weekly on Fridays.

The update in the index's cadence is in response to market feedback that a weekly base value change index will better reflect more frequent domestic buying and selling activity.

Platts initially proposed the specification and frequency changes on May 30 in a subscriber note available here.

After a period of industry feedback, assessment specification changes will be as follows:

Platts also will launch monthly averages for both the Mexico rebar assessment and index, effective August 2025. The first calculations will reflect the monthly average of weekly prices published in the month of August.
