Platts proposes to increase frequency of US Compliance Carbon price assessments to daily

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is proposing to increase the frequency of its US Compliance Carbon assessments to daily from weekly, effective June 11, 2024.

Currently, Platts publishes the following US Compliance Carbon Assessments every Thursday:

RGGI Current Month Strip Current Year Vintage ARJAF00
RGGI Next Month Strip Current Year Vintage ARJAG00
RGGI Next December Strip Current Year Vintage ARECA04
CCA Current Month Strip Current Year Vintage ARJAH00
CCA Next Month Strip Current Year Vintage ARJAI00
CCA Next December Strip Current Year Vintage ARECB04
CCO Current Month Strip Current Year Vintage ARJAJ00
CCO Next Month Strip Current Year Vintage ARJAK00
CCO Next December Strip Current Year Vintage ARECC04

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative is an 11-state Cap-and-Trade system to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector. It represents the first cap-and-invest regional initiative implemented in the US.

California Carbon Allowances and Offsets are issued by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. Entities can use these allowances (CCA) or offsets (CCO) to meet their compliance obligations. California operates the largest compliance market in North America.

The frequency for these nine assessments would be increased to daily, in line with Platts existing US carbon coverage and following the US publishing calendar.

  • Time Stamp: 14:30 New York
  • Unit: US dollars per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (USD/mtCO2e)

More details about Platts publication schedule can be found here.

In addition, Platts proposes to introduce minimum and maximum volumes for its RGGI, CCA and CCO assessments as follows:

RGGI 1,000 mtCO2e to 100,000 mtCO2e
CCA 1,000 mtCO2e to 100,000 mtCO2e
CCO 1,000 mtCO2e to 10,000 mtCO2e

The daily assessments would be published in the Platts Carbon Markets Daily, Megawatt Daily, on Platts Carbon, Energy Transition and Power Markets Alert, and in the Platts Pricing Database.
