Platts to launch ACCU Soil Carbon assessment

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will launch a price assessment for Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) generated from Soil Carbon methods, effective May 5, 2025.

ACCUs are issued by Australia's Clean Energy Regulator (CER) to carbon project developers based on legislated methodologies. They are used to offset emissions by liable entities under Australia's Safeguard Mechanism scheme and can also be used to offset additional emissions on a voluntary basis.

Each ACCU represents 1 mt of CO2 equivalent.

The launch of the new price assessment was first proposed on March 24, in a subscriber note available here(opens in a new tab).

The daily spot assessment intends to provide more transparency on growing activity in the Soil Carbon segment of the ACCUs market.

This assessment will reflect the price of credits generated by projects storing additional carbon in agricultural soil. Examples include improving fertilizer application, re-establishing pasture or modifying grazing practices as specified by CER.

The specifications of the new price assessment are as follows:

  • Volume: 500-50,000 mt/CO2e
  • Currency: Australian dollar
  • Unit of measurement: Australian dollar per metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (A$/mtCO2e)
  • Delivery: Spot market
  • Frequency: Daily
  • Time stamp: 1630 Melbourne/Sydney/Canberra time
  • Platts Publishing Calendar: APAC Carbon Calendar

A monthly average will also be published for the assessment.

The assessments will be published in Carbon Market Daily under the following symbols:
