Platts to launch CFR Southeast Africa sulphur assessment and Middle East-Southeast Africa sulphur freight assessment

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will launch a new weekly CFR Southeast Africa sulphur spot price assessment and a new weekly Middle East-Southeast Africa sulphur freight assessment, effective May 2, 2024.

The launch reflects changes in market dynamics that have arisen thanks to the global energy transition, including an increase of sulphur flowing to southern Africa for use in metals mining and processing.

Platts initially proposed the launch of these assessments on March 18, 2024, in a subscriber note available here.

Details of the CFR Southeast Africa sulphur assessment are as follows:

  • Granular Sulphur CFR Southeast Africa Spot $/mt
  • Quality: Granular sulphur in bulk
  • Quantity: Basis 35,000 mt
  • Basis and location: CFR Southeast Africa, basis Dar es Salaam, spot
  • Timing: Product to be delivered two to six weeks forward
  • Frequency: Weekly

  • Units of assessment: US dollars per mt

Details of the Middle East-Southeast Africa sulphur freight assessment are as follows:

  • Sulphur Middle East-Southeast Africa 35,000 mt $/mt
  • Cargo Size: 35,000 mt
  • Loadport: Middle East, basis Ruwais
  • Disport: Southeast Africa, basis Dar es Salaam
  • Timing: Product to be loaded two to four weeks forward
  • Frequency: Weekly
  • Appears in: Sulphur Market Report
  • Unit of assessment: US dollars per mt

The prices will be assessed on Thursday of each week based on information received up to 1630 London time, and will follow a London holiday calendar.
