Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is seeking feedback on a proposal to expand its US Gulf Coast petroleum coke (petcoke) market reporting by adding a mid-high sulfur assessment and making specification amendments to its existing petcoke price assessment series, effective May 16, 2025.
This proposal results from research and market engagement, where market participants are seeking more transparency around price differentials between grades of petcoke defined primarily by their sulfur content.
The new price assessment would reflect the value of FOB USGC petcoke cargoes with a 5.5% typical sulfur specification, and a sulfur range from 5.1% to 5.9% in $US per metric ton. The assessment would reflect cargoes of a typical volume of 10,000 mt. Cargoes of other grades, qualities and locations may be normalized for assessment purposes.
Concurrently, Platts proposes to amend the specification range for its existing FOB US Gulf Coast High Sulfur assessment (CPAAA00) from 5.5%-7% to 6%-7%. Other specifications for FOB US Gulf Coast petcoke assessments would remain unchanged.
Platts FOB USGC petcoke assessments appear in Platts Coal Trader, Platts Coal Trader International, and on Platts Service Page Numbers GCI0961 and GCN0961.
Full details of Platts petcoke assessments can be found in the Global Coal Specifications Guide.
