What are ESG Ratings Regulations?

The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is responsible for supervising ESG rating providers under Regulation (EU) 2024/3005 on the transparency and integrity of ESG rating activities. The regulation introduces EU-wide requirements for ESG rating providers, including authorization and registration, organizational governance, independence, conflicts-of-interest management, transparency of methodologies and data sources, complaints handling, recordkeeping, and public disclosure obligations. Its purpose is to strengthen the reliability, comparability, and integrity of ESG ratings used by investors, issuers, and other market participants in the European Union.
