Platts to change specifications, name of Methane Collection carbon credit assessment, Feb. 2

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, will change the methodology for its Methane Collection price assessment to reflect the value of voluntary carbon credits with a Core Carbon Principles (CCP)-label, issued by projects managing methane emissions, effective Feb. 2, 2026.

These changes are in response to growing availability and demand for credits with a CCP label in the methane management segment of the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). With the acceptance of CCP labels, buyers are looking at a wider array of project types in the methane space, across a range of geographic regions.

CCP-labelled credits are issued for projects using CCP-approved methodologies, which have been verified and tagged by the Integrity Council for the VCM (ICVCM) as meeting high integrity standards for effective governance, transparency, tracking and robust independent third-party verification.

Currently, the Platts Methane Collection price assessment reflects the value of the most competitive and the most fungible credits issued by methane collection projects with a vintage from each of the past three years, including the current year, and rolling on the first day of July. Specifically, the price assessment has reflected the value of Verra Carbon Standard-certified, non-CCP-labelled landfill gas credits from Turkey.

Effective Feb. 2, Platts will change the assessments' specifications to reflect credits with a CCP label, from any region and any methane collection or methane management project, including gas leakage reduction projects. These specifications will better reflect current liquidity in the market, as well as evolving buyer preferences.

Platts recognizes an additional growing preference for projects with a minimum BBB or A rating, but understands that a significant amount of methane management projects remain unrated. As such, Platts will not include a rating in its specifications for this assessment.

To align with the above changes, Platts will change the name of the assessment as detailed below, to better reflect the nature of credits considered within the assessment, and to reflect market perception of these credits:
