Platts launches Brazil natural gas price assessments

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, has started publishing weekly Brazil natural gas spot price assessments, effective immediately.

Platts has observed an increase in spot market trading activity and has launched assessments for the three major natural gas pipelines to increase market transparency.

Platts publishes preço do gás, or the price of gas (PG), and preço da molécula, the price of molecule (PM), assessments for the Transportadora Associada de Gás (TAG), Nova Transportadora do Sudeste (NTS), and Transportadora Brasileira Gasoduto Bolívia-Brasil S.A. (TBG) pipelines. Platts also publishes Brazil PG and PM spot price assessments, which are a simple average of the three pipeline assessments.

The PG assessments represent the price of gas delivered to the pipeline, including entry costs, while PM represents the molecule price, or the price of gas without transportation costs.

The assessments are based on fixed-price trades, bids, offers and indicative values from a survey of market participants. Platts may also utilize information from related markets like GUS and Residual Balancing transactions from the Portal de Oferta de Capacidade (POC) for delivery within one month of the trade date.

The weekly assessments are published on Thursdays, representing market information gathered until 1630 São Paulo time. Prices are published in Brazilian real per cubic meter, with conversions to Brazilian real per million British thermal units (MMBtu) and US dollars per MMBtu also published. The assessments follow the Brazil holiday calendar. When Thursday falls on a holiday, assessments are published on the last business day preceding Thursday.
