Workers are protesting against a plan to close the plant by 2022.

Output from France's four remaining coal plants with 3 GW capacity was zero Wednesday, data from grid operator RTE show, with most coal units also not generating in December.

Workers at Cordemais near Nantes in western France have been on strike since early December with the CGT union calling for a moratorium on closure while biomass conversions plans were assessed.

EDF modernized Cordemais under the Coal 2035 plan before the Macron administration decided to fast-track coal closures.

In August, EDF presented plans to convert Cordemais to biomass under the Ecocombust project.

Uniper, which operates France's other two coal plants, said last week that it has entered into exclusive talks with Czech energy company EPH on the sale of its French power plant assets with the consultation process with employee representatives starting this month.
