December 23, 2024
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, wishes to clarify the calendar roll for its US Carbon Compliance coverage: California Carbon Allowances (CCA), California Carbon Offsets (CCO), and Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) price assessments.
The assessment roll process for Current Month, Next Month, and Next December futures vintages, calendar months and calendar years follow industry-standards, in line with the Intercontinental Exchange futures contracts for California Carbon Allowances, Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiatives, and California Carbon Offsets. This transition occurs when the next month's contract rolls over to become the front-month contract, which happens after the last trading day of the delivery month.
The calendar roll takes place after the last trading day of December, as per the ICE's schedule:
Alongside the calendar roll, the spot vintage will also roll to the same year as the front-month contract.
For example, on final settlement date, Dec. 26, 2024, the front-month contract assessed for CCAs, CCOs and RGGIs will be Dec24 V24. The Jan25 V24 contract will be the next month, and the Dec24 V24 contract will be the next December vintage.
The next day, Dec. 27, 2024, the front-month contract assessed will be Jan25 V25, the next month contract assessed will be Feb25 V25, and Dec25 V25 will be the assessed next December futures contract.
