October 14, 2025
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will launch two weekly anhydrous grade ethanol assessments on a CFR India basis, effective Nov. 18, 2025.
The decision follows the observation of rising ethanol imports by India from the US, Brazil and other locations. The new assessments will also align with the increasing need for pricing transparency in the region.
The two new assessments will reflect shipment loading one month ahead (M1) and two months ahead (M2) from the month of publication. The loading laycans will roll on the first Tuesday of every month. Platts has observed that shipment timelines from the US and Brazil vary throughout the year, tracking different liquidity periods. The two laycans aim at capturing the bulk of this spot trading activity.
For example, for the month of September, Platts will assess:
October Shipment (M1)
November Shipment (M2)
These assessments will roll on the first Tuesday of October, when Platts will assess:
November Shipment (M1)
December Shipment (M2)
The assessments will reflect denatured anhydrous grade with a purity of more than 99% ethanol by volume.
The assessment will reflect a parcel size of 3,000-5,000 mt. Other volumes may be taken into consideration, and may be normalized back to 3,000-5,000 mt for assessment purposes . An ethanol cargo shipped to Indian ports could consist of multiple parcels on one vessel.
The assessments will reflect CFR Nhava Shiva or Mundra. Cargoes shipped to the other Indian ports meeting the quality specifications may be taken into consideration and may be normalized back to the above basis locations for assessment purposes.
The assessments will reflect a payment term of an usance letter of credit (LC) of 180 days from the bill of lading date. Platts may consider and normalize price information with usance LC of shorter or longer than 180 days for assessment purposes.
In the absence of CFR India pricing data, Platts may look at related markets, such as the Platts Chicago Terminal (AALRI00) ethanol benchmark, and factors such as quality premium, insurance, freight and other costs, or other adjacent ethanol market information, for assessment purposes.
The weekly assessments will be published in $/ mt, reflecting the latest information sourced from the market up to the close of the assessment window at 16:30 Singapore time on Tuesdays and following the Singapore calendar.
Platts originally proposed the launch in a note published Aug. 11, and extended the proposal on Sept. 22 in a note: Platts extends proposal to launch CFR India anhydrous grade bioethanol assessments | S&P Global
The weekly assessments will be published on Platts Biofuels Alert page 0014, in the daily Platts Biofuelscan and Weekly Ethanol report.
