Coal, Thermal Coal
October 01, 2025
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will amend the standard specifications and launch price differential assessments for sulfur and ash in its FOB Kalimantan thermal coal export assessments, effective Oct. 30.
Platts will change the typical range of sulfur and ash content reflected in the following FOB Kalimantan thermal coal assessments:
| Thermal coal grade | Sulfur | Ash | ||||||
| Current | New | Current | New | |||||
| Range | Typical | Range | Typical | Range | Typical | Range | Typical | |
| FOB Kalimantan 4,200 GAR (CSBKI00) | 0.6%-1% | 0.6% | 0.5%-0.8% | 0.5% | 7%-10% | 7% | 6%-8% | 6% |
| FOB Kalimantan 5,000 GAR (CSAKI00) | 0.8%-1% | 0.8% | No change | No change | 8%-12% | 8% | 8%-10% | No change |
| FOB Kalimantan 5,900 GAR (CSAKH00) | 0.8%-1% | 0.8% | No change | No change | 8%-15% | 8% | 8%-10% | No change |
For FOB Kalimantan 5,000 GAR (CSAKI00) and 5,900 GAR (CSAKH00), Platts will also increase the standard shipment volume size to 75,000 metric tons from 55,000 mt, while shortening the loading period to 15-60 days forward from the current 90 days forward, to better reflect typical trading norms.
Bids, offers, trades and price indications for other qualities and terms may be considered and normalized to the standard qualities and terms for assessment purposes.
Additionally, for sulfur and ash, respectively, Platts will launch daily price differential assessments for every 0.1% and 1% above the typical levels, up to the maximum of the ranges.
This decision follows a monthlong consultation starting June 30, followed by a proposal published Aug. 5.
Platts continuously reviews its assessment methodology and seeks to reflect the most up-to-date specifications observed for its market coverage.
