Platts proposes to discontinue FOB Richards Bay 6,000 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal netback on Dec 17, 2021

S&P Global Platts is proposing to discontinue the daily FOB Richards Bay 6,000 kcal/kg NAR netback thermal coal calculation, effective Dec. 17, 2021.

Platts has observed a shift towards thermal coals with lower calorific values, with the 6,000 kcal/kg NAR coal of South African origin no longer commonly traded in the region.

This price is currently calculated as a freight netback from the CFR India market, adjusted for calorific value and ash content. Over the past several months Platts has observed a shift in trade flows, with prices in India increasingly more influenced by Australian thermal coal supplies.

The full description of the underlying methodology for this calculation can be found here: https://www.spglobal.com/platts/PlattsContent/_assets/_files/en/our-methodology/methodology-specifications/global_coal.pdf.

The FOB Richards Bay 6,000 kcal/kg NAR 7-45 Day price is published on the fixed page 230 of the Platts real-time alert, in the Coal Trader, Power in Europe publications, and in the Platts price database under the code CSEUW00.
