Platts proposes to publish monthly North America Gas Carbon Intensity calculations

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, proposes to launch monthly natural gas carbon intensity calculations for 20 hubs and locations across North America Nov. 15.

Measuring the carbon intensity (CI) of different commodities has become a growing metric around greenhouse gas emissions from types of production across multiple sectors.

Natural gas in North America is no exception, and the Platts North America Gas Carbon Intensity calculations aim to reflect the CI of gas at delivery to 20 key hubs and LNG facilities across the continent.

The CI for each location would be published in mtCO2e/MMBtu, to reflect total GHG emissions per MMBtu of gas.

In addition, Platts proposes to publish a cost of carbon for the CI calculations as a $/MMBtu equivalent using the Platts Carbon Removal Credit Assessment (CRC, ACRCA00).

It would reflect the cost required to offset the fugitive GHG emissions using credits derived from natural or technological carbon capture.

Carbon intensity calculations and associated costs of carbon would be published on a monthly basis on the 15th of each month. If the 15th falls on a non-working day, the data will be published on the next working day.

Platts proposes to publish CI calculations for the following locations listed below:

  • Chicago city-gates
  • TCPL Alberta AECO-C
  • Dawn Ontario
  • Eastern Gas South
  • Waha
  • Henry Hub
  • NGPL Midcontinent
  • Kern River Opal
  • SoCal Gas
  • PG&E Malin
  • Houston Ship Channel
  • Transco zone 6 non-NY
  • Algonquin city-gates
  • Calcasieu Pass LNG
  • Cameron LNG
  • Corpus Christi LNG
  • Cove Point LNG
  • Elba Express LNG
  • Freeport LNG
  • Sabine Pass LNG

The North America Carbon Intensity calculations and associated carbon costs shall be published in the following locations:
