Platts continues to review feedback on proposed change to US Midwest implied duty-unpaid aluminum premium calculation

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is continuing to review feedback regarding a proposed change to its US Midwest implied duty-unpaid premium calculation for P1020A Midwest aluminum but will not implement it Aug. 1, 2025 as originally proposed.

Feedback from market participants regarding the proposed change indicated a desire for any implementation to take place later than the Aug. 1, 2025 date previously proposed. Following further review, Platts will publish an update -- including a revised date for potential implementation -- regarding its proposal to change the existing calculation to a freight net-forward calculation from Platts CIF New Orleans duty-unpaid assessment to US Midwest consuming locations.

The P1020A MW US Transaction Premium (Implied Duty-Unpaid) delivered US Midwest calculation (MMOFU00) and related assessments currently reflect material with an FOB Canada origin and prevailing Canadian aluminum tariffs. Under the proposal, the calculation would change to reflect a US port of entry to capture imports arriving from multiple origins.

Full details of the proposal to revise the calculation used to derive an implied duty-unpaid value for US aluminum imports can be found here.
