Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is clarifying that its European ex-works steel coil spot price assessments reflect carbon dioxide emission (CO2) surcharges when quoted as part of a total ex-works price or netback to ex-works.
This clarification comes on the back of increasing enquiries regarding CO2 surcharges and Platts treatment of these surcharges in the assessment process.
Platts has observed that some European steel mills have begun listing CO2 surcharges as an individual component of final total ex-works pricing, while other steelmakers have continued to offer material as a single all-in ex-works price.
Although not listed out separately, associated carbon emissions costs for other steelmakers are typically included in the single all-in ex-works prices offered, according to market feedback gathered by Platts.
Platts European domestic coil assessments include Northwest and South European hot-rolled coil, cold-rolled coil and hot-dipped galvanized coil.
The assessments are published on pages 1200, 1233 and 1263 of Platts Steel Alert, in SBB Steel Markets Daily, on Platts Connect, in Platts Market Center, and in the Platts price database.
