SUBSCRIBER NOTE: Platts proposes to discontinue European emissions price assessments

Due to evolving market dynamics and increased transparency of European emissions market pricing information, S&P Global Platts is proposing to discontinue its daily European emissions price assessments of EU Allowances and Certified Emission Reductions by May 2017.

In particular, a shift from over-the-counter bilaterally settled contracts to exchange-cleared OTC and exchange-based derivatives trading has reduced the requirement for independent OTC price assessments in the European emissions market.

Platts proposes to discontinue the daily emissions price assessments and re-focus on European carbon market news, data analysis and other market-relevant content.

Platts European emissions price assessments appear in European Power Daily, on European Power Alert pages EP390, EP391 and EP481 and in Platts Market Data category EU.

Platts will continue to publish daily third party European emissions prices and trading volume data from the exchanges, ICE Futures Europe, European Energy Exchange and NASDAQ OMX.

The symbols proposed for discontinuation are: EUAs expiring in December 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020: EADSP17, EADSP18, EADSP19, EADSP20 CERs expiring in December 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020: CERDE17, CERDE18, CERDE19, CERDE20 EUA monthly rolling averages: EAMSI17, EAMSI18, EAMSI19, EAMSI20 EUA monthly averages: EADS317, EADS318, EADS319, EADS320 CER monthly rolling averages: CERRA17, CERRA18, CERRA19, CERRA20

Following the proposed discontinuation, Platts proposes to rename the symbols listed below and to populate this series with third party exchange settlement data: EUAs: EADLP00 (nearest December), EADLP11 (nearest December plus 1), EADLP22 (nearest December plus 2) CERs: CERLE00 (nearest December), CERLE11 (nearest December plus 1), CERLE22 (nearest December plus 2)

Under this proposal, Platts would transfer all European emissions market data from Platts Market Data category ET to EU, also by May 2017.

In light of this proposal, Platts will also review the methodology used in its European power clean spark and clean dark spread calculations and fuel switching indicators.

Platts seeks feedback on this proposal to power@spglobal.com with copy to pricemethodology@spglobal.com by February 10, 2017.
