Oman's cargo volume rose 9% in 2021 as container throughput climbed 2%

Oman's cargo volumes increased 9% on the year in 2021 while container throughput rose 2%, despite the pandemic and global supply chain constraints, the transport ministry said Feb. 12.

Omani ports handled 77.1 million mt of cargo in 2021, with the biggest volume recorded at Sohar port, the ministry said in a statement carried by state-run Oman News Agency. Sohar port handled 58.65 million mt in 2021, up 8.7% from a year earlier, while Salalah port saw a 10.2% uptick in cargo volumes to 16.9 million mt during the same period.

Khasab port handled 91,344 mt of cargo, an 82.4% jump from 2020, while Sultan Qaboos port cargo volumes rose 7.1% to 799,687 mt from 2020.

In 2021, Omani ports handled 5.2 million TEUs of containers, a 2% increase from 2020, with the biggest volumes recorded in Salalah port.

Salalah port's container throughput reached 4.5 million TEUs, while Sohar port saw a throughput of 716,000 TEUs.

Omani ports received more than 10,600 vessels, a 1% uptick from 2020.
