As Europe's top steel producer, Germany is pivotal in decarbonizing the sector through electrification and the use of green hydrogen in direct iron reduction. Low-carbon steel plants are poised to tap into a national hydrogen pipeline system, displacing coal and gas feedstocks and cutting emissions by 28 mt CO2 per ton of hydrogen used.
